The David Shafer Essay Scholarship Contest students supports Georgia’s character development curriculum by encouraging students to research and critically think about important character traits shown by specific individuals in American history.
The Results of the Contest
With a remarkable 270 scholarship entries from across the
state, Senator Shafer announced the winners of the essay contest at the Capitol on March 27, 2015. The first place winner was Madison McMichael of Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia for her essay on Teddy Roosevelt. She received a $1,500 scholarship award. In second place, came Elizabeth Robinson of Ola High School in Mcdonough, Georgia with an essay on puritan reformer Anne Hutchinson. She received a $750 scholarship award. Margaret Shin of Johns Creek High School in Johns Creek, Georgia came in third place with her essay on Abraham Lincoln. She received a $250 scholarship award. All three winners were recognized in an official Senate Resolution and declared Outstanding Georgians by Senator Shafer.

Madison McMichael is a member of the National Honors Society, Spanish Honors Society, and the MuAlpha Theta math honors society. She will be attending the University of Georgia in the fall to study political science and art history. Read her essay on Teddy Roosevelt.

Elizabeth Robinson is a recipient of the Georgia Certificate of Merit and the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. She intends to return for the second time this summer to work in a parkinson’s research laboratory. She is headed to Mercer University in the fall on a Mercer University Presidential Scholarship. Margaret Shin is an honor roll student and Beta Club volunteer with four years on mock trial. She has interned at Andersen, Tate & Carr; attended the Governor’s Honors Program; and intends to pursue a career in law and international relations. Read her essay on Abraham Lincoln.
